Retalhuleu is one of Guatemala's most important departments. Aside from being a vital economic center for the country, it's also one of the country's biggest tourist attractions. Retalhuleu is also one of the younger departments in Guatemala. Founded in 1877, it was formed when it was separated from Suchitepéquez. The department is rich in culture, and its people are extremely knowledgeable about Guatemala's many myths, legends, and stories. Retalhuleu is important for its agricultural industry, which, due to its climate and fertile grounds, is optimal for planting many of Guatemala's signature crops including cotton, cacao, and sugar cane. Another reason why Retalhuleu is so important to the Guatemalan economy is Champerico sea port, one of the country's Pacific region's most important access points. It's also a big location for fishing.

Retalhuleu has much to offer for tourists. For those looking to relax, there are numerous beautiful beaches on the pacific coast. You can also visit IRTRA theme park, which is made up of Xocomil, a water park, and Xetulul, an amusement park. There are also many ruins that, although relatively unknown, are Guatemala's oldest glyphic ruins. You can also visit Retalhuleu's famous cathedral, known for its grandiose beauty. Retalhuleu also has many natural attractions that add to the region's mystique and beauty.
