The Monja Blanca is an orchid that pertains to the “alba” variety. It has a thick stem in order to store water, so it may use it during dry seasons. It has a petal in the center of its flowers to allow an easier “landing” for the insects that pollinate it
If you are in the northwestern area of Guatemala, in Verapaz, Sierra de Las Minas, or in the woods of the volcanoes, pay close attention because you may see a Monja Blanca on the top of the vegetation and this is one of the rarest orchids in the world. And, if it is November, December, January, or February, you may see it with open petals. If you are lucky enough to see it, be EXTREMELY careful not to harm it because it is a protected plant and it may become extinct. The Guatemalan Government decided to declare it national flower in 1934, and it symbolizes peace, beauty, and art.
