Guatemala has one of the richest and most diverse floras in the world, compared to its surface. Guatemala has more than 8,680 different species of plants, distributed according to the weather and orographic features of the territory..

  • Tropical forest
In Petén (to the north of the country), you can see trees that reach 70 meters tall in the tropical forests. You can also watch precious wood trees within the herbage, like mahogany, cedar, and rosul or jocote fraile, or you could see species like the palm tree, corozo palm tree, chicozapote, mangle, and giant fern, which can reach a great height and long age. The Mayans used the wood from the chicozapote tree for building purposes, and an example can be seen in the lintels of the big temples in Tikall.
  • Woodlands
In the mountains of the western area of the country you can enjoy the peacefulness, quietude, and order of the coniferous, ilex, pine tree, firs, and cypress woodlands
  • Distinctive Trees
There are two very distinctive trees in Guatemalan life: The hormigo tree, the tree from which the marimba - Guatemala's national instrument - is made, and the Ceiba - a tree considered sacred by the Mayans and also the country's national tree.
